When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed

I sat down at the computer to write this blog post. I didn’t know what it was going to be about yet. As I sat down, I felt so overwhelmed with various emotions. I felt overwhelmed with a mental list of to-dos that have yet to be checked off yet. As lame as it may sound, I was even overwhelmed with a full DVR with weeks of shows that have gone unwatched, voicemails that may never get returned, emails I’ve been wanting to respond to for two weeks, and blogs that have gone unread.

Life got so busy as soon as my mom had been admitted to the hospital. Then, she passed away and mere hours later we were meeting with the funeral director, planning her services, cleaning the house for guests, all the while – life continued on.

The days blurred together. Before I knew it, I was back in my office sitting in front of my work computer asking myself, “What just happened?”
As you can tell from my post yesterday, this past weekend was also nonstop which is nice… for a while.
But then you follow a nonstop weekend with another nonstop week. Meanwhile, those items on my mental checklist are still sitting there, unchecked, as I continue to play catch up on life.

The level of mental exhaustion I’ve reached can only be compared to what I felt the week leading up to my wedding. I couldn’t sit down on the couch for more than three minutes without falling asleep. Talk about frustrating!

So, as I sat here, deciding what to write about, here are the lyrics of the song that started playing:

“All that I know is I'm breathing
All I can do is keep breathing
All we can do is keep breathing”

And, that said it all.

breathe.

No matter how overwhelming and exhausting life can and will get, we’re here. We’re still here on this earth, and we still have a chance to enjoy the little things.
So, today, I’m going to make a point of finding peace in the sound of the birds when I wake up; in the glistening of the sun as it reaches its way up into the sky in the morning; and even in the way it feels to shut my eyes at night after a productive day. I’ll pay attention to the way it feels when my lungs fill up with air.

God doesn’t give us anything we can’t handle.
I know I can handle this.
One deep breath at a time.

Hang in there...I know things can be overwhelming and I can only imagine how much they are for you right now. But, like you said, just breathe. Things WILL get done. Just do what you need to do for yourself and worry about the rest later.

Praying for you sweet girl!! You are so right, just take everything one step at a time. That's all you can do!! Don't let the voicemails and emails and such overwhelm you. There's times when you just can't get to them all. Everyone understands. You are such a strong, strong person and I admire how gracefully you have handled yourself through everything! A great role model for all of us.

You hit the nail on the head. We are here, breathing. And that's the most important thing..

Ever heard this song..

"I breathe in, I breathe out, put one foot in front of the other, take one day at a time..."

Best wishes to you, friend!

It's so true, sometimes it's so easy to let the world overwhelm you because let's face it - life is hard and overwhelming and super fast sometimes! Every now and then you just have to close your eyes and just breathe and do nothing. There are so many things we should do, could do, would do... But sometimes we need to just sit, do nothing, and appreciate that no matter how bad or crazy things seem, it's all going to be alright.

I love, love, love this post. It made me think of my yoga classes or guided meditation instructions that are always saying things like "notice how effortlessly your breath moves in and out" - and sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't but it DOES keep coming. You will get through this, it will get easier, and all of those little things you keep meaning to get to later will wait.

Take your time getting back in to those things. No one is expecting you to check off your list. Right now it is all about healing. Blessings to you!

Alright, sweet sisssybelle: I want to give you some of my most favorite and powerful scriptures to *hug* onto...I just gave them to a co-worker of mine that is going through a similar situtation as you are...they help me too:

Let your hope make you feel glad. Be patient in time of trouble and never stop praying - Romans 12:12

Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid nor dismayed, for the Lord they God is with you wherever you go - Joshua 1:9

When you go through deep waters I will be with you - Isaiah 43:2

Keep breathing, deep and slow....You will be stronger for this, I promise. GOD keeps his promises and "he is good...all the time"

Amen!
HUGS!!!!!!!!

I am astounded yet again at your strength and outlook.
I have been stressing over something that seems big to me but is really so minor comparatively. Thank you for the wonderful reminder that we are still here and life is for living and to be enjoyed.

Your words are a gift to us, I hope you feel the love right back!
