House Hunters Can Be Ridiculous

I hope you're ready for a random post because it's about to get random up in here! Do you watch House Hunters? I do. In fact, about 75% [or more!] of my DVR is filled with House Hunters. But not House Hunters International. Oh, no! That show is just not the same.

I have seen so many episodes of House Hunters it's not even funny. I just get fascinated with the homes and seeing what the real estate market is like throughout the country. I also get a kick out of the potential home buyers.

I've been an event planner throughout most of my professional career so I've seen and heard of a TON of weird food/accommodation demands requests that people have. It looks like realtors probably experience the same quirks when working with their clients. Here are some things I've seen on House Hunters:

"I won't move into a house that was built in the 1950's or earlier... because the chances of it being haunted are greater."

News flash: People have died after the 1950's too which means basically any house could be haunted. Even new homes. [Built on an old graveyard? Duh.] Anyway, this lady obviously ended up getting a newish home.

"I can't have a house with any brass hardware. Drawer handles, light fixtures, etc."

I feel like on a list of reasons to NOT like a home, this should be one of the very last items. Although, the article that the picture is from was written all about brass fixtures being outdated. Meh.

"I don't want to live near a corn field because I'm deathly afraid of the children that will come out of it."

Not. Even. Kidding. Word-for-word. And she's serious. She also didn't want the garage to be in the front of the house. Shoot, if we could find her a house with all that AND no windows, maybe she'd be happy? Totally normal.

And the one that gets me every time:

"But it doesn't have granite counter tops."

I will never get it. Not having a finished basement? Sure, I can understand that being a deal breaker. Not having central A/C? I can understand that too. But not having granite counter tops? Shouldn't be the biggest deal in the world. To each their own! I bet you're a "have-to-have-granite-counter-tops" kind of person, huh? ;)

What crazy "wants" have you seen on House Hunters? Better yet, what are YOUR odd requests for a home? Spill it! :)

My roommate and I LOVE house hunters but I feel the same way about some of their demands. What frustrates me the most is when they refuse to compromise on details that won't fit into their price point. If you don't have the money for it stop demanding it!

i don't watch the property shows bc i get too upset at what you can get FOR THE SAME PRICE in other states compared to where i live in CA, esp now that we're shopping for our own home. but so many people don't realize that they can change most of what they don't like, like brass fixtures AND esp the granite countertops. people are so ridiculous.

haha after JUST having gone through a kitchen remodel (which included putting in more cabinets, a new countertop and backsplash) I will say I WILL be one of those people who wants granite and a backsplash in my next house. Holy exhausting. That being said, people who get suckered into houses that are TENS of THOUSANDS over their budgets kill me. Um, what are you doing!? OR who get hung up on things that are even easier to switch out- light fixtures. chika-what?!

I love House Hunters but you're right, International just isn't the same (and I don't like it).

Things that get me... counter tops, stainless steel appliances, wall color/paper, fake hardwood... People, all those things you can change! It's a lot easier to change those then the bones of the house!

Love this show!! We watch it all of the time. The people are so ridiculous, you just have to laugh. granite counter tops and brass fixtures?? Those are two things that can easily be changed down the road when you save up a little money after buying the house.

But in my next house, I do want a large laundry room, big closets and wood floors. Nothing crazy here!

Oh my good lord I love to yell at the people on that tv show! I love to watch for similar reasons you do, but i always end up wanting to slap the ever loving daylights out of some of those people! they all seem so snooty and spoiled in what they want. the worst offense is when they make comments on things that can EASILY be changed like carpet, paint, light fixtures, cabinet handles, etc. my husband and i are going to be doing our own house hunting this year and he goes, "are we gonna come across like those jerks on house hunters?" :)

HAHAHA! I love shows like these & all the other ones with rookie home renovations & things. Hilarious! & I can't agree more about the counter tops. I understand that some people want to move in & not have to do a thing. However, if that the only thing that's holding you back, don't you think that could take a back seat on priority list & it CAN be done later! It cracks me up though seeing first time home buyers & stuff!

Ok honestly Billy watches it DAILY!!!!!!!! Records them all I feel like! We hate international too! hahah so funny. You'd fit in just well at our household :) This one couple we saw recently were outrageous...saying the most ridiciulous things. we were laughing so hard! this is so true!

LOVE HH, too! (HHI sucks!)

I think if cornfield girl had a house with no windows AND padded walls, she'd be juuuuuust fine ;)

I saw one the other night, an Asian woman requested the "chi" and "feng sui" be just right, and requested the front of the house be facing northeast.

She didn't like a house because the staircase was located directly in front of the front door, which wasn't good for the feng sui. The husband liked the house so he said, "I looked at the staircase - it looks like it's JUUUST off-center from the door. So it should be okay"

OMG! I love House Hunters. So funny! HAHAHAH The things people hate... so random! :)

Oh my goodness! I love this show, and you're right, International is NOT the same!!! I always laugh at the granite people. That's such an easy fix! pricey? maybe, but it's definitely not a deal breaker for me. For us the dealbreaker was a yard. If it didn't have a sizeable yard that we could fence, it was a no. We have three dogs who haven't had a yard in almost three years. It's a nightmare for all of us. Literally the first thing I did when we saw the listing for our new house, was call and ask if they had any pet restrictions, or restrictions on fences.

@ Miss K - my husband refused to watch the show after we signed the contract on our new home. Unless their budgets were WAY higher than ours, or if it was a cool location. Otherwise he said he was getting too mad at what some people were getting in their homes that we didn't have in ours. He's ridiculous!

Yep, people are absurd, plain and simple.

I don't know if I have any odd requests for my future home... maybe just a spot for a dishwasher? I really want one of those.

HAHAHAH!! This is so hilarious because my roommate and I were watching this show the other day and I couldn't get over the comments they were making. OMG sooo funny!

I record that show religiously and laughed out loud when I read your post. So, true and so ridiculous. I'm glad your on the same page with me. lol

I love House Hunters too. It makes me thankful to live in Texas where the I can get more house for my money! And I completely agree... House Hunters International just isn't the same!!!

hahaha omg the corn fields one is RIDICULOUS!!

Ohmygosh my old roommate said the granite thing the other day and I almost gagged. If you want them so badly, replace them yourself. Sheez. I love those house hunting shows. Property is so cheap here.. comparatively speaking.. so when people are buying a 500,000 home, I always gasp. That would get you a pretty darn big house in Tulsa!

It is so funny that I came across this post today because today, one of my friends is filming HHI here in France! I'm going to send her the link to this post and remind her not to say anything dumb :)

Haha, I never understand why people are so distraught when there are no granite countertops. They're not THAT expensive to put in, especially if you're being shown a house that is $20k below your budget. PRETTY SURE they cost less than $20k and voila, perfect house.

I love House Hunters but sometimes the people make me crazy!! I hate when a person complains about everything - especially things that can be easily changed. And my favorite was an episode where a guy didn't want his girlfriend to buy a house because it didn't come with a refrigerator. I wish I was kidding.

Jennifer M. said...

So true! These shows crack me up, especially when they complain about things that can easily BE FIXED BY THEM! Don't like the cupboard handles… buy new ones. I would think house location would be a more important factor to people than cupboard handles. Lol. It's a little harder to move a house than it is to buy new handles.

Jennifer M. said...

That being said, I like HH Internationals better. It's more interesting to me to see how people in other places live than to see other homes in my own country. The one thing that bugs me on that show though is when people turn their noses down at anything that doesn't look 100% American. When in Rome, people! When in Rome!

Hell, I would prefer an old home that could be haunted, haha!

HGTV's House Hunters has been helping people reach their dream houses for almost 13 years now. Have you seen their spin-off series, Chelsea?
Granite counter tops increase home value regardless whether you're thinking of selling your home or not - what I like about Granite counter tops is that they are durable, affordable and most importantly, they come in unique styles.

I used to watch “House Hunters” back then. They were really very helpful. Well, Calvin's right. Granite countertops are naturally resistant to heat and metal abrasions which makes them very durable and highly suitable for the kitchen. :)

House hunting may be one of the most stressful things to some, but it may be a breeze to others. Either way, people have their own preferences for a new place, which makes it easy or hard for them to find one. I can understand what you're trying to say that some of their requests are just downright outrageous. I've seen a lot of houses that look good on the outside but a total wreck in the inside, thus making my choice quite simple. I'd go for a house with a good interior, some furniture on it, and a garden to grow some flowers.
