The One Thing I Know For Sure

journalday2

One of my greatest passions in life since I could pick up a pencil has been writing. My writing has changed throughout the years but it’s always been my way to connect with this world and with life. I was so delighted when I found out that Danielle over at Sometimes Sweet would be starting Journal Day. Similar to what she used to do for her students, she’s giving everyone a prompt to ponder and write about.

I started this blog because of my passion for writing. After college, all my writing stopped and I knew there was a part of me that was missing. I’ve had maybe about five blogs throughout the years and eventually my posts dwindled away. I don’t want that to happen with this blog. I also don’t want this blog to be ALL pictures. While I know pictures are fun to look at, I don’t want to get away from the sole purpose of Life is a Sunset; to reflect and write. So, without further ado, here’s Danielle’s prompt followed by my words :)

The older we get, the more certain we get about who we are and what our purpose is.  For me, a lot of it is still unknown, but as I make my way down my own path, I have begun to realize that there are indeed some inevitable truths that I know for sure. On your own blog, write a post that talks about "the one thing you know for sure."

I knew right away what I was going to write about. The one thing I know for sure is that my family is always going to be there for me. Family is forever. Because this life is so unknown and we are faced with unforeseen obstacles, it’s important to have a rock; something solid, stable, and loving. My parents are that rock for me.

In the back of my mind growing up, I always knew that my family would be there for me. I had an amazing mother who made the sacrifice of being a stay at home mom to care for us. She was there every morning as I got ready for school and was there as soon as the school bus dropped me off. It was a given. I had a wonderful father who never gave up and worked hard for a living to provide for our family. He was home for dinner every night and was there with open arms to help me with homework, regardless of how hard he had worked all day. Again, it was a given.

I admit, I had quite the “teenage angst” through my middle and high school days. Hanging out with my family just wasn’t cool in my book and when I had to do it, boy, did I complain! I had always been sassy growing up but I was just stubborn as heck throughout those years. But they still loved me.

I have made decisions that my parents didn’t agree with. I have no idea {yet} what it’s like to have your own child and to have them go and do something that you don’t want them to do, knowing you have no control over it. I’m sure it’s not easy. In fact, I’m sure it’s one of the toughest things you have to go through as a parent. You have eighteen years to raise and shape and teach your children and then they spread their wings and fly. But again, they’ve still loved me through everything. Through my stupid decisions, through my rash decisions, through my emotion-fueled decisions – they’ve still been there.

I fall, I get up, they’re there. I fall again, get back up, and they’re still there.

After making this move to Utah and leaving behind all my family and friends, I’ve truly learned what it means to be a family. It’s that feeling of comfort. It’s the ability you have to pick up that phone at any hour and know that someone is going to pick up on the other end, wanting to help you. It’s trust. It’s honesty. It’s integrity. Most importantly, it’s unconditional love.

In a world full of broken homes, I’m lucky and blessed to have a set of parents as my heroes.

Without a doubt, if there’s anything I know for sure it’s that my family will always be there.

If you’re in the mood to write, I highly recommend going over to Sometimes Sweet and taking part in this awesome journaling experience :)

Umm, this post was amazing! Writing has always been my passion too, and far too often it gets swept under the rug because of life and its duties. I think adding this weekly to my blog will be a fantastic way to get back into it. :) Thanks so much for sharing!
